Building design & planning permission

Our customer required a secure garage and machinery store constructed within limited space in their tranquil Surrey garden. After considering many options, it was decided that ‘The Stapleton’ with heavy duty lockable double doors would be the perfect solution.

In many instances our Stapleton doesn’t require planning permission as the ridge height is lower than 4m after construction. The preferred location of the building, however, was close to a boundary resulting in planning permission being necessary.

We prepared the planning drawings for the customer to submit to their local authority, the application went through smoothly, and few months later we recieved confirmation to proceed with the project.

Into the workshop...........

Once in the production schedule, the required oak and other timber components are either picked from stock or ordered in. When the frame takes centre stage in the schedule, our workshop team begins traditionally handcrafting the oak frame. All of our oak framed buildings are pre-jointed, pre-drilled and numbered.

The frame is dry fitted (would you believe – upside down on a laser leveled floor!) and all the components are carefully checked before being packed ready for delivery. Site erection is then as simple as following the jointing plan on our working drawings.

Meanwhile on site .......

Whilst the oak frame is being jointed in our workshop, the project manager and contractors are busy constructing the foundations, base and dwarf walls at the customers property.

The principle oak frame is erected and draw pegged during the morning of delivery. The knee braces and tie beams ensure the main frame is rigid. Some ancillary timbers are used to brace the side store oak frame for a short period.

When the boarded panels are fitted, the entire building becomes rigid. Rafters and ridge board are then fitted. Lead and dpc installed in the concealed weatherproofing system and behind the bottom weatherboards ensure that building will be watertight.

With the roof covering in place, and rainwater goods fitted, the double doors are hung using the heavy duty ironmongery supplied with the kit. The doors were oiled and stored in another building during the site operations. The whole project took less than a week to construct on site.

A few days later the final landscaping was completed and the new bench given its pride of place looking across the garden.
